On July 27 and August 3, the Coimbra Exploratory Science Centre hosted an educational activity led by researchers from the be-WISE project, focused on the importance of soil health. Aimed at the general community, with a special focus on children and families, the initiative sought to raise awareness about soil biodiversity preservation and promote environmental consciousness.
The activity, which took place from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, was divided into three parts. In the first part, participants explored and collected soil samples from the surrounding areas of the Exploratory, including the garden and forested areas. The children, acting as little researchers, had the opportunity to get their hands dirty, identifying living organisms present in the collected soil samples.
In the second part, the samples were analyzed using electronic magnifying glasses, and the living organisms were identified with the help of a dichotomous key in the form of a game. The activity concluded with a storytelling session related to the theme of soils, capturing the attention of the young participants.
The initiative attracted more than 40 children from the Coimbra region, standing out as a highly successful action in promoting environmental education. Here are some photographic records of the activities.
